Building a Deck on a Sloped Bluff Lot in St. Joseph

St. Joseph grew up across a series of bluffs rising from the Missouri River, and that terrain means a noticeably higher share of local backyards have real grade change than in a flat river-valley town. A single flat deck platform on a steep lot often ends up either too tall at the low end or requires a long single stair run — a multi-level design with landings and shorter stair runs usually works better and can also reduce the footing excavation needed at the low corner of the yard. We assess the actual grade during the free on-site estimate rather than assuming a standard flat-lot layout will work.
